Time Management Pitfalls

What do you need to watch out for when managing your time? What time management pitfalls exist and how can you effectively overcome and avoid them? In this article we will discuss different time management pitfalls, how to identify them, avoid them and overcome them if necessary.

The Biggest Time Management Pitfall: Procrastination

The biggest time management pitfall is procrastination. If there is something we consider unpleasant, too large or simply do not want to do then we will have a tendency to put it off. This is known as procrastination and seems to be the biggest problem people face when trying to manage their time efficiently. In order to overcome procrastination you need to have some incentive to do the activity, one way of doing this is to promise yourself a reward either after the task is complete or after you have completed a specific amount of time on the task. If the task is a large one that will require a lot of time, promise yourself that after you have done 30 minutes on the task you will reward yourself, if it is a small task then promise yourself a reward at the end of the task.

Setting Unrealistic Goals Can Be a Time Management Pitfall

Another one of the time management pitfalls that one can fall into is setting unrealistic goals. If one sets unrealistic goals then the goal is never achieved and as one tries to reach it you become more and more disheartened and give up on all goals and time management. If you are prone to setting unrealistic goals find a friend or family member who will be very honest with you and who will let you know if they feel your goals are unattainable. Try to set smaller goals and work on completing smaller tasks then larger ones so that you gradually build up using tasks that are easily attainable.

Long Term Goals with No Intermediate Goals or Steps Can Be a Time Management Pitfall

Another time management pitfall which people may fall into is of setting goals that have a deadline in the distant future without breaking this down into smaller goals. If the deadline for a goal is too far in the future and there are no intermediate steps then it can be easy to loose focus and give up on the achievement of the goal. By setting intermediate steps one is able to work towards a long term goal one achievement after the next and so stays focused on achieving the end result.

Not Having a Plan of Action

Another time management pitfall that people fall into is not starting each day with a plan of action. If you do not have a plan of action you will tend to give into the urgent, whether these tasks are important or not. By following a plan of action every day and having a task list you are able to achieve important tasks and achieve them before they become urgent.

Working in a Disorganized Space

Having a disorganized workspace is another time management pitfall. Although disorganization in terms of space may not seem directly related to effective time management just think about the amount of time you waste searching for items you need. If all these items are organized and you have a place for everything and everything stays in its place then you will be a lot more likely to manage your time effectively.

In conclusion, some of the time management pitfalls which people most often fall into are procrastination, setting unrealistic or too long-term goals, not having a plan of action and working in a disorganized space. By working on avoiding or eliminating these time management pitfalls you will be better able to manage your time effectively.
